0-In Design Automation, Inc. today announced that it has closed a $7M round of equity financing Equity Financing

that will enable the company to more rapidly deploy its innovative white-box functional verification Functional verification, in electronic design automation, is the task of verifying that the logic design conforms to specification. In everyday terms, functional verification attempts to answer the question "Does this proposed design do what is intended?" This is a complex task,  products.

Brinson Partners, Inc. led the financing; earlier 0-In investors Sigma Partners Sigma Partners is a major venture capital firm based in Silicon Valley and Boston. Sigma Partners invests in early-stage information technology companies (semiconductor, software and hardware).

The firm was founded in 1984 by J. Burgess Jamieson and C. Bradford Jeffries.

Better Functional Verification is Key for Growth of EDA (1) (Electronic Design Automation) Using the computer to design, lay out, verify and simulate the performance of electronic circuits on a chip or printed circuit board.  Industry

"The electronics design automation market is ripe for a furious retooling cycle targeted for designing 0.18-micron and 0.13-micron system-on-chips," noted Erach Desai, industry analyst for Credit Suisse First Boston Credit Suisse First Boston was originally the trading name of the Financière Crédit Suisse-First Boston, a London-based 50-50 investment banking joint venture formed in 1978 between the First Boston Corporation and Credit Suisse. . "Not surprisingly, most of the revolutionary technology break-throughs are emerging from the focused startups. Logic verification will continue to be an escalating problem in the SoC design arena. Revolutionary solutions, such as 0-In's white-box verification technologies, offer tremendous productivity and time-to-working-product advantages."

"This strong level of funding is testament to the importance of the need for improved functional verification for today's complex chip designs," observed Ron Collett, EDA industry analyst and President of Collett International.

Investment Reflects Strong Demand for New 0-In Products

The EDA market has responded very positively to the production release of 0-In's initial products, 0-In Check and 0-In Search, earlier this year. "The more that we learned about 0-In's team, products, technology and market, the more certain we were that we wanted to share in its success. The list of companies evaluating or using 0-In's white-box product suite reads like a `Who's Who' of the semiconductor and electronic-systems businesses," said Tom Dolson of Brinson Partners. Mr. Dolson, who has now joined 0-In's Board of Directors, added, "I am looking forward to working with this highly experienced team as it moves white-box methodology out into the market. Eventually, we expect use of this type of functional verification tool to be required for RTL (Register Transfer Level) A high-level hardware description language (HDL) for defining digital circuits. The circuits are described as a collection of registers, Boolean equations, control logic such as "if-then-else" statements as well as complex event sequences;  sign-off for most mainstream chip designs."

Capital to be Used for Product Deployment

The new capital will be used to accelerate the deployment of 0-In Check and 0-In Search as well as other white-box functional verification products now under development. 0-In is rapidly expanding its applications and sales teams in response to strong demand from current and prospective customers. 0-In now has applications and support centers in San Jose, Ottawa, Austin and greater Boston. Additional regional sales and applications offices will open throughout the current year.
