Stapleton, (Lois) Maureen


American actress (b. June 21, 1925, Troy, N.Y. —d. March 13, 2006, Lenox, Mass. ), was one of only a few performers to win the three major American show business honours—the Academy Award, the Tony Award, and the Emmy Award. She won her first Tony for her performance in her first major Broadway play, Stapleton won her Emmy for her role in the television production The Rose Tattoo (1951), and later (1971) was awarded another Tony for The Gingerbread Lady . Among the Paths to Eden (1967) and her Oscar for her supporting role as anarchist Emma Goldman in Reds (1981). Other notable performances came in the Broadway productions Toys in the Attic (1960) and Plaza Suite (1968), the films Airport (1970) and Interiors (1978), and the TV productions Queen of the Stardust Ballroom (1975) and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1976). Her autobiography, A Hell of a Life , was published in 1995.
