It is her first since A Day Late and a Dollar Short in 2001 (Viking). In this one, Marilyn's longtime girlfriends have been telling her that her restlessness, hot flashes and general discontent are pre-menopausal signs. She soon learns she's pregnant--at 44, just as her three children are out of the house. Add a meddlesome med·dle·some adj. McMillan is also the editor of Breaking Ice: An Anthology of Contemporary African-American Fiction (Viking, 1990). She has gained wide popularity with a prescription that relies on self-discovery against a backdrop of contemporary black issues and the importance to women of a network of girlfriends who help to sort things out and act as sounding boards. Some readers might find this novel predictably formulaic, but the formula still works for readers who like the details of everyday life and a feisty main character who, no matter how put-upon, triumphs in the end.
