 POLLUTION IN WASHINGTON
SAN DIEGO, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- While Washington state has some of the nation's cleanest air and most unpolluted natural resources, it also has its share of environmental problems.
According to San Diego-based Vista Environmental Information Inc. there are almost 2,000 large quantity hazardous waste generators in Washington state.
Of these, 65 percent (or 1,276 of 1,972) are located in the Everett/Seattle/Tacoma area.
A large quantity generator is a source of pollution that generates more than one ton of pollutants during a month.
Vista maintains a registry of sites and companies nationwide that have potential environmental liability.
By including waste generators that produce less than the one ton of pollution per month, the overall figure for the state increases almost threefold, to 5,729.
"Besides these hazardous waste generators, Washington state has more than 7,000 underground tank sites. Roughly 5 percent of these leak," said Jerry Marani, Vista vice president.
"There does seem to be a willingness to deal with potential problems in Washington that we don't see in a lot of other parts of the country," he said.
Vista collects its data from local, state and federal agencies. It sells reports on potential environmental liability to lending institutions, environmental consultants, insurance companies and the legal community.
The waste-generating industrial, transportation and manufacturing activity seem concentrated in certain areas. Vista's database shows that zip code 98108 has the highest number of environmentally risky sites at 638, followed by zip code 98134 with 408 and zip code 98103 with 351.
