that the first of two massive boring machines have reached the terminus for the East Side Access project, even offering reporters the option of taking a subterranean tour last week.

The first machine has made its way underground from 63rd Street and 2nd Avenue to beneath Grand Central Terminal, where a new station and concourse will be built. The MTA said workers will begin on a cavern beneath Park Avenue near 50th Street that will connect the newly built tunnel with parallel tunnels.

Corp., which was hired by the MTA for the project, said there will be eight tracks in total when the project is completed in 2015. The tunnels are 22 feet in diameter.

It's slow going, with the boring machines digging an average of 30 feet per day. Bedrock is unsurprisingly stubborn.

"The cutter discs need to be replaced nearly every day," Calvanico said of the boring machines, which weigh several hundred tons each. Joe Trainor, a chief engineer with MTA, said the "muck" generated by the boring machines is sent to Long Island City.

East Side Access--also dubbed the Grand Central Link--will connect the Long Island Rail Road's Main and Port Washington Port Washington, uninc. town (1990 pop. 15,387), Nassau co., SE N.Y., a suburb of New York City, on the north shore of Long Island and Manhasset Bay. There is extensive manufacturing, much of it reflecting the region's past association with the aircraft and aerospace  lines to a new terminal to the east side train station. It's slated to cost $7.2 billion.

Although MTA cuts will delay some projects, East Side Access is not supposed to be affected, even though not all of the project's funding has been secured. The East Side Access project will improve the ride into Manhattan for those living on Long Island and Queens, but some Long Island officials are upset that a plan to provide a so-called third track project between Hicksville and Floral Park Floral Park, village (1990 pop. 15,947), Nassau co., SE N.Y., on Long Island, a residential suburb of New York City; inc. 1908.
