(CHARLESTON) SOUTHERN TRASH BACKFIRES.

from a 17-point underdog to inspire one of the nation's most talented teams. But that's just what Charleston Southern did earlier this week and the UCLA Bruins The UCLA Bruins are the sports teams for University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The Bruin men's and women's teams participate in NCAA Division I-A as part of the Pacific Ten Conference. Athletic alumni
Jackie Robinson, Rafer Johnson, Yang Chuan-kwang (C.K.
 were not happy.

``We saw a tape of them talking down about our program,'' Charles O'Bannon said. ``They said things like they had a chance and we weren't all that good. We wanted to prove to ourselves and to them that we are.''

The proof was in the performance - a 109-75 victory that sent the No. 2 seeded Bruins into the Midwest Regional second round against Xavier.

Charleston Southern started running its mouth on selection Sunday, when forward Rolando Hourruitiner told a local NBC NBC

The Bruins' video crew learned of the comments and tracked down a copy from NBC. It was incorporated into one of several motivational videos coach Steve Lavin showed his players this week.

Then forward Jeff Daniels told the Buccaneers Buccaneers can refer to:

  • The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, founded in 1976, still exist
  • The Los Angeles Buccaneers played only in the 1926 season
coach, Tom Conrad, that Cameron Dollar couldn't shoot. (Dollar responded with 15 points.)

Then Conrad said he thought shooting guard Brett Larrick and Hourruitiner, a small forward, could start for UCLA.

Then Hourruitiner repeated his statement about playing UCLA.

``We've been very fortunate,'' he said. ``We were expecting a tougher team than this.''

The comments were enough to rile UCLA's most low-keyed player, J.R. Henderson, who took to screaming as he grabbed several of his nine rebounds.

``I gave the guy who said that stuff a 'bow,'' Henderson said. ``I made sure I gave him one. You have to automatically show them you aren't going to let them talk like that.

``(The coaches) played the tape for us over and over. It definitely clicked something inside us.''

The Bruins showed a cool confidence all week, but they held to Lavin's seasonlong motto of respecting but not fearing opponents. They were well-versed in the Buccaneers' accomplishments - beating South Carolina South Carolina, state of the SE United States.
