CAMARILLO - ``Youth and Aviation'' is the theme of the 25th annual Camarillo Air Show on Saturday and Aug. 28, featuring military aircraft, vintage planes and helicopters, experimental aircraft and a variety of children's activities and musical entertainment.

There will be opportunities for visitors to meet this year's grand marshal Grand Marshal is a ceremonial, military, or political office of very high rank. He was the founder of AeroVironment and the inventor of the first practical flying machine powered by a human being.  Jr., and a special feature will be displayed from a Youth Aviation Art and Science Fair, with exhibits designed by children.

Organizers said one of the key goals for this year's show is to stimulate the natural dreams many children have about flight.

``I have tried to involve children in ... meaningful ways,'' said Larry Beckett, chairman of the air show for the Experimental Aircraft Association, which sponsors the event each year.

``The air show is our way of sharing with Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  families the fun, diversity, and contribution of aviation.''

Proceeds will help support the EAA's Young Eagles program to provide first flights for young people in the community and other activities of the Experimental Aircraft Association's Chapter 723.

Grand Marshal MacCready is the chairman and founder of AeroVironment, Inc. He is known as the father of human-powered flight Man-powered flight is aerial travel in an aircraft powered exclusively by direct human energy.

as designer of the Gossamer Condor, the Gossamer Albatros and the Gossamer Penguin and the Solar Challenger.

``He's really a genius,'' said Beckett.

MacCready's Gossamer Condor was the first human-powered aircraft to achieve sustained, maneuverable flight, and the Gossamer Albatros was the first human-powered aircraft to fly across the English Channel.

They are on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institution, along with the Solar (-powered) Challenger, which flew from Paris to Canterbury England in 1981.

In 1985, the Smithsonian Institution commissioned MacCready to build a replica of the flying reptile the pterodactyl pterodactyl (tĕrədăk`tĭl), popular term for a pterosaur.

This year's air show poster shows a child playing with an airplane in front of a larger plane, and a special part of the show will be displays of entries from the Youth and Aviation Art and Science Fair Contest, developed with the help of the Ninety-Nines.

Young people through the age of 18 were eligible to enter projects related to aviation, but limited only to the child's imagination.

Entries might be games, art or building projects, or activities related to aviation technology, math or science.

``Children look to the sky and have a wonderment in flight, a dream,'' said Christine Sztukowski, a pilot and member of the Ventura County chapter of the Ninety-Nines. ``Every adult pilot had a dream of flying as a child. With the art science fair, we are trying to help a child's dream come true.''
