'YOU ARE HERE' ART DOESN'T PASS MUSTER.

Byline: Ryan Oliver Staff Writer

Members of the Van Nuys Airport Van Nuys Airport (IATA: VNY, ICAO: KVNY, FAA LID: VNY) is a public airport located in Van Nuys, California in the San Fernando Valley, within the Los Angeles city limits.  Citizens Advisory Council voted unanimously Tuesday night against a proposed public art project that would inform travelers that they live in the universe.

The proposed $272,000 set of nine life-size bronze statues, each depicting their sculptor, had been previously approved by the city's Cultural Affairs Department to be placed at the Van Nuys FlyAway Bus The FlyAway Bus is a shuttle bus service operated by Los Angeles World Airports, which transports people to and from Los Angeles International Airport. Currently, there are three routes in service with separate schedules; the routes have no stops in between their terminus stations  Terminal.

``I guess it's important to know what planet you're on,'' said Councilman Gerald Silver. ``But to spend a quarter-million dollars ... seems a bit much.''

The artwork by Paul Tzanetopoulos was authorized under a Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  city law that requires all public building projects to invest 1 percent of their cost in art.

Silver, like other council members, said he wasn't opposed to the concept of spending money on art, but that this project was bizarre and out of place in the FlyAway.

Airport advisory council members unanimously voted Tuesday night to recommend against the project and to inform the Cultural Affairs Department that it wants the agency to work with them in deciding an art project.

The department has the option to decide whether it will follow the recommendation.

``I think the artist was well-intentioned,'' Silver said at the meeting. ``But I think the fault lies with the city of Los Angeles

 in approving this.''

Council member Robert Rodine added, ''I think it was an intellectual challenge in itself to capture the relevance of the artwork to the city and to the FlyAway.''

Rodine said he would like to see an art project that says something about the San Fernando Valley's aviation history or something visually stunning that would evoke an emotion in people.
