'Wrong to pick on me!' COURT: Fly-tip row dad hits back.

Byline: Martin Bagot

A BUILDER fined pounds 1,000 for fly-tipping has accused the council of "persecuting the little man" for what he says was a misunderstanding.

Now the 39-year-old has hit back at council officials and claimed it was all a misunderstanding.

He said he was told by a friend who lived in the street that rubbish left near the garages was taken by refuse collectors every fortnight fort·night

"This lady looks after my children twice-a-week. She asked if I could help her move her settee down there and I said 'yes, I could do with getting rid of a few boxes'," he said.

"If I thought it was illegal why would I leave boxes with my name on them? "I don't like fly-tipping and I get it a lot at the back of my house, but I didn't realise. They have just caned me for all the stuff the residents had put there."

Angie Timms, senior environment officer at Coventry City Council, said: "Fly-tipping is very high profile, it is always in the news.

"Residents are constantly reminded that it is illegal to fly-tip, that it is a criminal offence which carries a fine of up to pounds 50,000 and even imprisonment Imprisonment

"Waste should only be deposited at an authorised waste disposal site. Anyone who runs a business which transports waste needs to hold a waste transfer permit and provide waste transfer notes to their clients which show where the waste will be removed to.

"If your waste is found flytipped you could be held responsible, receive a heavy fine and criminal record. It's not worth risking it by giving a man down the pub a tenner to take it off you."
