'We had marriage guidance .. but it couldn't save us' Peter Andre talks of final bid to patch it up with Katie.

AS Peter Andre belted out Call The Doctor yesterday, the teenage girls watching screamed their appreciation - unaware that their idol's catchy comeback single also sounds the death knell death knell

 on his marriage.

The Aussie star's inspiration for the pop song was the failed counselling that he and Katie Price, aka Jordan, went through in a last-ditch attempt to save their marriage.

Although Peter is said to be "devastated" that marriage guidance wasn't the solution, and says the past four weeks have been "hell", he credits his music for helping him keep his life on track.

So it must have sparked mixed feelings when he got a standing ovation for singing about his ailing relationship yesterday, during live rehearsals for his headline appearance at tonight's prestigious Bollywood film awards.

Speaking to him before the IIFA IIFA International Indian Film Academy  gig in Macau, China, where he will sing four tracks in front of a televised audience of 600 million people, 36-yearold Peter revealed his pain at splitting from Katie.

He said: "The past four weeks have been the worst of my life. It was hell. No matter what happens, you never stop loving someone. Initially I couldn't even have thought about work - my head was everywhere. It still is everywhere.

"But it''s been a month now and I know I''ve got to start pulling myself together.

. This, and the work I am doing now, is beginning to give me confidence again. Singing has given me something to focus on.

"I never expected the attention I've been getting and I am so glad this is happening. I've only been here a couple of days but it's already turned out better than I ever hoped.

"Finally, I am beginning to smile again. It's not like I'm a bundle of joy now, but it's getting better. I'm even cracking terrible jokes!"

Only months before announcing their split, Peter had persuaded Katie to try private therapy to give their fourand-a-half year marriage one last chance.

A source close to the glamour model confirmed yesterday: "Yes, it was Pete who left Katie - but not until after he had done everything in his power to make the marriage work. Neither of them take divorce lightly and both wanted their relationship to work for the sake of the kids, if nothing else. So Pete persuaded Kate to give counselling a go once they started having frequent, more hostile rows.

"He really was willing to try anything, if it might help. "Although they both went into it willingly, it was more of a Band-Aid gesture - a desperate final attempt to patch up the marriage and make it work.

"Pete was devastated that it wasn't the solution." Peter added that Harvey, seven, Junior, who is four on Saturday, and 23-month-old Princess, are his top priority.

He said: "Kate and I have three beautiful children. And so for them, I want to keep things as amicable as possible.

"I love spending time with the kids, I would see them 24/7 if I could. So I don't want to get into a public slanging match slanging match

with Kate. I just want us to be good parents."

Sadly, since announcing the end of their marriage last month, their relationship has become increasingly hostile.

After returning from seeing his family in Cyprus, Peter discovered that 31-year-old Katie had thrown him out of their pounds 3million marital home in Woldingham, Surrey. She also had the locks changed and the alarm system re-booted. He is currently renting a pounds 1.8million mansion 40 miles away.

He has also pleaded to be allowed to maintain regular contact with Harvey - Katie's son from a previous relationship with footballer Dwight Yorke This article is about Dwight Yorke, the football player. For the black supremacist, see Dwight York.

Peter's gig in Macau tonight is one of his first public appearances since his break-up with Katie. While he has largely avoided the limelight, his estranged es·trange

They might be dealing with their split in very different ways, but it has affected their appearance in the same way. Katie and Peter have each lost a stone in weight.

It may be too late to Call The Doctor as far as their marriage goes. But for Pete, with his comeback single out at the end of next month and a tour planned for later this year, music is helping to mend his broken heart.
