'Walk to school buses' will cut the need for car trips.


Two schools in Northumberland Northumberland (nôrthŭm`bərlənd), county (1991 pop. 300,600), 2,019 sq mi (5,229 sq km), NE England. Northernmost of the English counties, it is separated from Scotland by the Cheviot Hills and the Tweed River, and borders on the  are spearheading a new drive to improve road safety for youngsters going to and from lessons.

Special 'walk to school buses' are being launched in Belford and Cramlington this week in a bid to give pupils a safe and healthy start to the day.

The walking buses involve groups of children who make their way on foot from home to school under the guidance of trained adult supervisors.

They aim to take the pressure off parents in the morning and provide a regular means of getting to school each day without the need for car journeys.

Walking buses will be launched at Belford First School on Wednesday and at Cramlington's Northburn First School on July 6.

Yesterday Coun John Smith, county council executive member for highways, said: "Anyone who has seen the massive influx of cars twice a day at the school gate knows the dangers involved, as well as the petrol petrol: see gasoline.  being guzzled.
