'To you goes half the glory'.


Ernest Hofstetter, whose team first traced the route used by Sir Edmund Hillary to conquer Mount Everest, died at his French chalet with a view of Mont Blanc Mont Blanc (môN bläN), Alpine massif, on the French-Italian border, SE of Geneva. One of its several peaks, also called Mont Blanc (15,771 ft/4,807 m), is the highest peak in France and the second highest in Europe.  on June 1.

He was 95.

Hofstetter was on the Swiss expedition that had to turn back just short of the peak in 1952 but is credited with forging the path that Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Tenzing Norgay

(born May 15, 1914, Tshechu, Tibet [now Tibet Autonomous Region, China]—died May 9, 1986, Darjeeling [now Darjiling], India) Tibetan Sherpa mountaineer.
 used in their successful assault a year later.

Acknowledging the Swiss contribution, Hillary's team sent them a telegram after reaching the peak: "To you goes half the glory."

"He was kind, but he could also be hard," his son, Michel Hofstetter, told The Associated Press Associated Press: see news agency.
