 and its member companies take pride in announcing the 2001 VITA Wireless Samaritan Award Winners. These are individuals who with the aid of their wireless phone stopped a crime, assisted a neighbor or saved a loved one.

Every day, over 140,000 calls are placed to emergency services emergency services Emergency care '…services …necessary to prevent death or serious impairment of health and, because of the danger to life or health, require the use of the most accessible hospital available and equipped to furnish those services'  from wireless phones - amounting to close to 100 calls per minute. As part of Wireless Safety Week, the wireless industry is encouraging the American public to make a difference by using their wireless phones to help others.

The VITA Wireless Samaritan Awards are given annually to individuals from all 50 states, the District of Columbia District of Columbia, federal district (2000 pop. 572,059, a 5.7% decrease in population since the 1990 census), 69 sq mi (179 sq km), on the east bank of the Potomac River, coextensive with the city of Washington, D.C.
