By its nature, public relations is devoted to serving particular interests by presenting them to the public in the most  ploy. Bizarre. Weird.

On Thursday, Presley called it quits.

After a 19-month marriage, Presley filed a three-page dissolution petition in Los Angeles Superior Court, citing irreconcilable differences The existence of significant differences between a married couple that are so great and beyond resolution as to make the marriage unworkable, and for which the law permits a Divorce.  with the eccentric, self-proclaimed King of Pop.

The standard document revealed little about the divorce and left many financial issues open or unaddressed.

Michael Jackson's publicist said he knew nothing of the action until another of Jackson's offices handed him a brief statement Thursday afternoon.

"Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley have mutually agreed to go their separate ways," the statement read. "However, they remain good friends."

Word of the split spread quickly and met with the same derision as the announcement of the couple's private marriage May 26, 1994, in the Dominican Republic.

"This is going to get ugly," quipped Jay Leno of the "Tonight Show" during his opening monologue. "According to divorce lawyers, you know, Lisa Marie is entitled to half of all the noses Michael acquired."

People interviewed Thursday near Jackson's boyhood home in Encino speculated that Michael Jackson had arranged the improbable marriage with the only daughter of Elvis Presley - the proclaimed king of rock 'n' roll rock 'n' roll: see rock music.  - to deflect bad P.R. after he was investigated for child molestation Child molestation is a crime involving a range of indecent or sexual activities between an adult and a child, usually under the age of 14. In psychiatric terms, these acts are sometimes known as pedophilia. .

The investigation, initiated when a 13-year-old boy said Jackson fondled and had oral sex with him, ended with a settlement between Jackson and the boy's parents.

"It was probably a setup to help him with the case he had with that little kid," said Hilda Zepeda of Studio City as she munched a sandwich and sipped a hazelnut latte outside a Starbucks coffeehouse.

Zepeda added that she had been a Jackson fan for years despite the molestation molestation n. the crime of sexual acts with children up to the age of 18, including touching of private parts, exposure of genitalia, taking of pornographic pictures, rape, inducement of sexual acts with the molester or with other children, and variations of these  allegations.

The singer has recorded such popular albums as "Off The Wall," and "Thriller." His latest recording, "HIStory Past, Present and Future Book I," debuted at No. 1 in June 1995, but lost its top spot in two weeks.

The couple had struggled to convince the public of their sincerity.

They vowed in prepared statements and in TV interviews that they loved each other. They publicly kissed on an MTV MTV

In a September 1994 award ceremony on MTV, Jackson held up his spouse's hand with his own gloved digits and proclaimed, "And just think, everyone said this wouldn't last."

Presley had declared in a public statement that her married name was Lisa Marie Presley-Jackson.

Now, according to court documents, she wants her name back, property rights determined and the right to address other marital assets in future filings.

Presley checked "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the divorce; the only other option in California's no-fault divorce laws is incurable insanity.

Family law attorneys say the form filed by Presley's Beverly Hills attorney, Douglas Bagby, is a basic, boilerplate A phrase or body of text used verbatim in different documents such as a signature at the end of a letter. Boilerplate is widely used in the legal profession as many paragraphs are used over and over in agreements with little modification or no modification. , bare-bones document that leaves virtually all options open.

She reserved the right to address community property issues and other asset concerns at a later date, to ask that Jackson pay her attorney fees and to state her assets at a later time.

With both parties worth many millions of dollars, legal sources said the pair likely has some form of prenuptial agreement prenuptial agreement (antenuptial agreement) n. a written contract between two people who are about to marry, setting out the terms of possession of assets, treatment of future earnings, control of the property of each, and potential division if the marriage is later . Indeed, one newspaper reported that Lisa Marie Presley would not get a penny from her husband if she divorced him within the first year of the marriage.

Jackson's worth has been estimated by some as at least $100 million, with Presley's Graceland assets alone estimated at roughly that amount.

Although there is no mention of a prenuptial agreement on the form filed by Presley, attorneys say there still could be one.

A prenuptial agreement could bypass the state's community property laws, which state that all assets deemed to be community property will be split evenly between the two parties.
