'TIS THE SEASON TO DECORATE VALLEY RESIDENTS DECK THEIR HALLS - AND LAWNS, AND ROOFS - WITH MORE THAN HOLLY.

Byline: - Jaime Spangrude

A string of twinkling lights just doesn't cut it anymore. Holiday decorating has become a BIG job.

At the North Hollywood home of the George Kainz family, the front yard is transformed into NORTHPOLEYWOOD with a little help from friends and Santa. Over in Valley Village, the task is no less daunting daunt

, but it's a solo mission taken on by 67-year-old Ann Spaulding.

The result is still the same: a luminous holiday gift created for neighbors and passers-by. Daily News readers shared their holiday decorating stories and provided us with the addresses of the most spectacularly lit homes in their neighborhoods.

Every year, Spaulding breaks out her Barbra Streisand Noun 1. Barbra Streisand - United States singer and actress (born in 1942)

Each year she tells herself it will be the last time she tackles the project, but then she thinks of the kids, the neighbors and Barbra, and that's enough to keep her going, she says.

of her two-story home, overlooking the front yard adorned with decorations and lights. You cannot miss this spectacular display that exudes holiday cheer as a giant North Star lights the way to her Farmdale Avenue home. She has spent countless hours adding her own personal touches, doing all the decorating by herself.

``If I'm not decorating, I'm out buying something for the house,'' she says.

Spaulding begins her decorating crusade the day after Thanksgiving and works on her home a few hours each day until it is complete.

This ``labor of love,'' as Spaulding calls it, sprang from childhood memories of viewing beautifully lit homes in Long Island, N.Y. ``Seeing those homes gave me the inspiration to do my own home,'' she says.

Kainz also credits fond childhood memories as the inspiration for decorating his North Hollywood home for the last 13 years. The only difference between him and Spaulding is that he has his wife, four children and friends helping to pull off his festive display.

``It's out of control - it's really large,'' says Kainz.
