'THE PATRIOT' WAR AND PEACE AND GIBSON.

Byline: - Glenn Whipp

It's hard to make a movie set against the backdrop of the bloody brutality of the American Revolution American Revolution, 1775–83, struggle by which the Thirteen Colonies on the Atlantic seaboard of North America won independence from Great Britain and became the United States. It is also called the American War of Independence.  and have it come out with an audience-friendly PG-13 rating. Or so says Mark Gordon Mark Gordon (born 10 October, 1956) is an American producer. He is originally from Newport News, Virginia. He has worked on numerous projects as both producer and executive producer including Speed, The Jackal, and Saving Private Ryan. , co-producer of ``The Patriot.''

,'' Gordon says. ``But we're not going to compromise the movie just to get a PG-13 rating. I mean, it is what it is. War is hell.''

And ``The Patriot,'' written by ``Saving Private Ryan's'' Robert Rodat Robert Rodat (born New Hampshire, 1953) is an American screenwriter. After noticing his son's birthday (June 6) shared the same date as the Battle of Normandy, he was inspired to write his Oscar-nominated script for Saving Private Ryan (1998). , doesn't turn away from that hell, particularly when it comes to the damaging effects a cannonball can have on the human head. But Gordon says the movie is a family story, not a war picture.

Directed by Roland Emmerich (``Independence Day,'' ``Godzilla''), the movie follows a father (Mel Gibson Noun 1. Mel Gibson - Australian actor (born in the United States in 1956)

Emmerich and producing partner Dean Devlin might seem strange choices to bring a historical epic to the big screen, but Gordon (who produced ``Saving Private Ryan'') says ``the two are great storytellers, no matter the genre.''

``There hasn't been a successful movie set against the American Revolution in 50 years,'' Gordon says. ``We were looking for Looking for

Gibson's involvement may ensure that. The filmmakers are banking on it, having paid the star $25 million for his involvement. Plus, nobody says, ``Give me back my son!'' with quite the same panache as Gibson.

``He's a real family man,'' Gordon says. ``We even added a child to his character's family; he now has six kids. But we couldn't keep up with Mel. His wife had their seventh just as we started making the movie.''
