'THE HUMAN CALCULATOR(TM)' ADDS UP FOR COMPTON'S NEWMEDIA

Unique and Motivational Learning Techniques Make Children Math Experts
CARLSBAD, Calif., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Scott Flansburg, the renowned "Human Calculator" of book and TV fame, brings his mathematical motivation and expertise to DOS CD-ROM format with the release of "The Human Calculator" available from Compton's NewMedia. This fully animated title features creative math strategies and action packed math games that transform any student into a "Human Calculator" math whiz.
"Scott Flansburg truly excites and motivates children through his unique mathematical methods," said Norman J. Bastin, executive vice president and general manager of Compton's NewMedia. "Many children are convinced that they don't possess the capability or intelligence to become proficient in math. Flansburg shows children that they can successfully accomplish what they once thought was impossible."
Flansburg offers alternatives to traditional methods. For instance, for addition, Flansburg teaches his students to carry numbers from left to right in the same way that we read. He also narrates each of the lessons and explains how his method helps children clearly understand value placement and reach solutions quickly in their heads. "The Human Calculator," which covers addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, is based on a proven teaching method to enhance math skills and grades.
"The Human Calculator" features both a "Cool Tricks" section that teaches children to calculate cube roots instantly in their heads and "Cal," an animated calculator who guides young users through the program.
Once users have successfully completed all four adventure games, they are officially deemed "Human Calculators" and can print out their own certificate to honor the achievement.
"The Human Calculator" is available on CD-ROM for DOS with an SRP of $39.95. The program requires an IBM compatible, 386SX or better, running at 25 MHz or more, DOS 5.0 or later, a minimum of 2 MB RAM, a 256-color SVGA card and monitor, sound card and a CD-ROM drive. A mouse is recommended.

Topping the list of leading Compton's CD-ROM titles is "Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia(TM)" for the PC and Macintosh(R). Compton's NewMedia is a subsidiary of the Tribune Publishing Co.
