'Shoot the bastards' says S.African minister


South Africa's deputy police minister on Thursday urged officers to "shoot the bastards", backing calls for tougher action against criminals days after police shot dead a three-year-old boy.

Mbalula admitted that innocent victims would unavoidably suffer in South Africa's war against crime but insisted that government stood by its "shoot to kill" policy against criminals.

A police officer killed a three-year-old boy on Saturday in Klipfontein, northeast of Johannesburg, during a hunt for a murder suspect.

Three-year-old Atlegang Phalane was shot dead in the back seat of a car, where he was seated with his uncle Bongani Mchunu. The police officer allegedly saw a pipe that looked like a firearm.
