'SMART' CROSSWALK LIGHTS FLASH FROM STREET.

SHERMAN OAKS - A crosswalk activated when a pedestrian steps off the curb - touted as Los Angeles' first ``smart'' crosswalk - began operation Monday near the Sherman Oaks Fashion Square mall.

When a pedestrian attempts to cross Riverside Drive at Ranchito Avenue, a series of yellow lights embedded in the pavement will flash and two lighted signs will alert drivers that someone is crossing, according to officials from the Los Angeles Department of Transportation.

Councilwoman Wendy Greuel, who represents the area, said the crosswalk is a response to the rising number of pedestrian deaths in the San Fernando Valley - from 17 in 1998 to 33 so far this year.

The crosswalk is the first of its kind in Los Angeles, said senior traffic engineer Brian Gallagher. The Sherman Oaks intersection did not qualify for a regular traffic signal based on traffic volume and other factors, he said.

Other intersections in Los Angeles also will be considered for smart crosswalks, which cost $35,000 to $75,000 each, he said.
