'SMART' CROSSWALK LIGHTS FLASH FROM STREET.

SHERMAN OAKS - A crosswalk activated when a pedestrian steps off the curb - touted as Los Angeles' first ``smart'' crosswalk - began operation Monday near the Sherman Oaks Fashion Square mall.

Other intersections in Los Angeles also will be considered for smart crosswalks, which cost $35,000 to $75,000 each, he said.
