'SEABISCUIT' RACES TO BIG DVD STAKES.

Byline: Greg Hernandez Staff Writer

UNIVERSAL CITY- ``Seabiscuit'' was the 15th-highest grossing film released in 2003, but home video revenue for the movie about the legendary Depression-era Thoroughbred has raced past the $120 million the film earned in domestic grosses.

``Seabiscuit'' has sold a brisk 6.5 million units in four weeks with combined sales of the DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

``They are putting more marketing behind it because of the Oscars,'' observed Scott Hettrick, editor-in-chief of Video Business, an industry trade publication. ``It's a significant title, one of their biggest of the year.''

``Seabiscuit'' has received two Golden Globe Award nominations, including for best picture-drama, and industry guild nominations for Ross and the film's cast. It is expected to receive some Academy Award nods when the Oscar nominations are announced Jan. 27.

Because it was released theatrically back in July, ``Seabiscuit'' is among high-profile films with Academy Award potential that are no longer in theaters except for a few special engagements.

Others award contenders already on video include the animated ``Finding Nemo,'' the biggest-selling DVD of all time, which is considered a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination for best animated film. ``Pirates of the Caribbean This article is about the franchise. ``If a movie is on store shelves, the products that sell the best are new theatrical releases that consumers are familiar with,'' said Ralph Tribbey, editor of DVD Release Report, an industry trade newsletter. ``When you begin to overlay that awareness with Oscar buzz, you are going to get a bounce in sales out of that.''

In previous years, such films as ``Moulin Rouge,'' ``Gladiator'' and ``Erin Brockovich'' were in similar positions and experienced a video boost when those films were nominated for Oscars.

``This horse has definitely got legs,'' Universal Studios Home Video President Craig Kornblau stated. ``It's an amazing achievement for a dramatic title, and we are thrilled at how well it continues to register with audiences.''
