, offering a total of $200,000 to local organizations or individuals who help the community.

An informational meeting will be held at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday in Santa Clarita City Hall council chambers to help prospective applicants learn the criteria and procedure for obtaining grants to help finance community service.

``It can be any individual who can take the money and be able to do things for the community,'' said Shannon Omessi, community service supervisor for the city.

``A lot of schools and arts groups get grants,'' she said.

Grants will be awarded in 2001 for efforts promoting and understanding, literacy, community beautification, school-based projects and the arts.

Omessi said grant-application packets will be distributed at the informational meeting, and city officials will explain the requirements, which include insurance, a contract and a follow-up follow-up,
