'SAM'S CLUB' IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS VIEWPOINT LOOKING TO COMPETE FOR A TITLE.

Byline: ERIK BOAL

Special to the Daily News

The days couldn't pass by fast enough for the Viewpoint of Calabasas girls' volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. An upright net, 3 ft (or 1 m) high, the top of which stands 8 ft (2.43 m) from the ground for men, 7 ft 4 1/8 in (2.  team.

Samantha Borenstein occupied her time by playing point guard on the girls' basketball team. Samantha Tellez took her talents to the soccer field. And Samantha Hyman helped organize trips to nearby Zuma Beach to train with teammates during the offseason.

It's been nearly 10 months since the door closed on one of the program's finest seasons, but "Sam's Club Sam's Club is a membership-only warehouse club owned and operated by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. History

" is back and ready to take care of unfinished business for the Patriots.

And Viewpoint coach Frank Pontello hopes to amass victories in bulk in pursuit of the program's first Southern Section title.

"I've been doing this for a long time and I've had some other good teams, but this group is real special to me," said Pontello, whose team suffered a five-game setback setback

in last year's semifinals to Div. IV-AA champion Westridge of Pasadena. "They're real focused because they know it's there and they're hungry."

So determined in fact that Viewpoint went back and reviewed the tape from the Westridge match at a practice two weeks ago in an attempt to provide motivation during grueling gru·el·ing also gru·el·ling

"They're a great team and we know they're going to be there (in the playoffs), but this is the best defense we've had and we have a lot more options this year (on offense), which has helped us a lot," said the 5-foot-3 Hyman, a returning All-Southern Section first-team honoree hon·or·ee

who recorded 368 kills and 347 digs last season. "We expect our competition to be working just as hard, so that's why we need to do whatever it takes to be successful."

That extra effort during the summer came in the form of several rigorous plyometric training stations set up by Pontello, which usually came at the end of practice to test the Patriots both mentally and physically.

"To get that close has only made us only want it more," said Tellez, a 5-2 libero Libero can refer to:
  • Libero (soccer), a more versatile type of centre back in soccer
  • Libero (volleyball), a player specialized in defensive skills in volleyball
  • Mitsubishi Libero, the Japanese market name of the Mitsubishi Lancer wagon
who led Viewpoint last season with 411 digs. "We know we have the talent, but in a big (match) it's all about who wants it more. And we want to be that team."

Although the Samanthas -- otherwise referred to as "Hymie", "Bo" and "T" -- all start and occupy every back-row spot during one rotation, Viewpoint is far from a three-headed monster.

Brooke Berka, Jordan Larson, Marisa Leonard and Michelle Lesser might not give the Patriots the imposing front-line presence of Harvard-Westlake of Studio City, Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  or Moorpark, but they give Borenstein plenty of options as Viewpoint has put together the toughest nonleague schedule in Pontello's tenure.

But the one match the No. 3 Patriots have circled for months comes Sept. 25 against top-ranked Westridge.

"It's a reminder to us every day in practice. It's helped us come together and work harder as a team," said Borenstein, a Div A DIV Associate of Divinity . IV second-team honoree who finished with 749 assists last year. "It was a really tough loss. But we had no regrets because we left everything on the floor."

A victory over Westridge would be an important step toward the Patriots becoming the first girls' team in school history to hang a section championship banner in the gymnasium gymnasium

. All seven of Viewpoint's titles have come from boys' tennis and boys' volleyball.

"To be the first girls team to win would be incredible," Hyman said. "We want that banner really bad."

Said Borenstein: "We don't compete with (the boys) because they support us and we support them, but that opportunity (to make history) makes us want it more."

After helping Viewpoint to three Liberty League titles and two Section semifinal appearances, the only number "Sam's Club" is concerned with this season is one, as in a victory Nov. 16 or 17 in the division final.

"Our focus is to be as good as we can be, but (winning the title) has always been the underlying goal," Pontello said. "I want to win this darn thing and so do they."
