'Red light' on green targets for Wales.

WALES is lagging behind the rest of Britain on environmental improvements, a damning report has concluded.

 said Wales was missing targets for protecting species and habitats, cutting greenhouse gases, saving farmland birds and improving water quality.

Its performance on climate change also came under fire from the bird charity.

By awarding two points for a green light, one for amber and none for red, each of the national administrations were marked out of 10.

The Assembly Government scored poorly with just three, falling behind Scottish and West-minster administrations which scored five and four points respectively. Northern Ireland received just two points.

RSPB Cymru surveys of curlew curlew (kûr`l), common name for large shore birds of both hemispheres, generally brown and buff in color and with decurved bills.  and golden plover show declines in Wales of more than 80% for both species since they were last fully surveyed in 1993.

Dr Tim Stowe, director of RSPB Cymru, said the findings were "disappointing" and a "wake-up call" for Cardiff's politicians.

He blamed the country's lack of progress on its failure to separate economic growth from exploitation of the natural world.

He said: "At a time when we are trying to find our way out of recession, we challenge politicians to invest in things our children will thank us for in future. "They need to put the natural world at the heart of decision-making if we are to halt the loss of our wildlife and wild places.
