'RUNAWAY' MOVIE SUCCESS.

Byline: Rob Lowman Entertainment Editor

Who ever would've thought that a romantic-comedy about a Hollywood hooker and a corporate raider corporate raider

would work? Not only work, but turn out to be a phenomenon.

Sounds preposterous on the surface. But Garry Marshall, who directed the 1990 hit ``Pretty Woman,'' starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, and paired them again in last summer's smash ``Runaway Bride This article is about meanings of Runaway bride. For other uses of the word Runaway, see Runaway.

``I would like to say my great direction, or a great script ... but I think casting is really what makes a great romantic comedy,'' says the gregarious gre·gar·i·ous

Marshall. ``If the two stars have chemistry, you can shoot it many different ways, but if the two stars don't have chemistry, they can take their clothes off, run around naked, and people won't stay (to watch).''

Both films are now out on DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

(His underappreciated ``The Flamingo flamingo, common name for a large pink or red wading bird, similar to the related heron, stork, and spoonbill but with a longer neck, webbed feet, and a unique down-bent bill. Flamingos are tropical birds, although large colonies have been observed high in the Andes.  Kid'' recently came out on DVD, too.)

And while Marshall points out that tension is also important to a romantic comedy (``It's all about kissing - or almost kissing''), he knows which element he'd choose among direction, script or stars. ``I'd say get the stars. They don't even have to be stars. When Richard and Julia were making 'Pretty Woman,' they weren't big stars, like 'Runaway Bride' stars.''

Which, of course, begs the question of what he saw in Roberts to cast her. At the time, the actress had been in ``Steel Magnolias'' and ``Mystic Mystic, rivers, United States

``I was screen-testing her with a bunch of other girls, and I thought she was very special. I liked her personally,'' says Marshall. ``She made me laugh, but I couldn't get it (on screen). So I tested her with a very funny actor named Charles Grodin Charles Grodin (born April 21, 1935) is an Emmy Award-winning American actor, comedian, and former cable talk show host. Biography

. And I told her that this guy is going to be funnier than the other actors, and he's not going to stick to the script, so see if you can hold your own. And that's when I first saw her do things that I had never seen her do, and I knew how to capture it (on film), and that made her very, very special.''

And that chemistry thing? Marshall says he took Roberts to New York New York, state, United States

to meet Gere. ``It was just the three of us, and I saw that there was something going on that could be captured on film.''

Marshall's instincts proved right - millions of box-office dollars over.

Bringing them back together for ``Runaway Bride'' was a different story. The chemistry was there, but directing busy, big stars is different, Marshall admits. ``But I thought our relationship was the same between 'action' and 'cut.' ''

One thing he tried to do in ``Runaway Bride'' was exploit Roberts' comic abilities. ``I told her, 'You didn't run and jump much in 'Notting Hill.' Let's go Let's Go may refer to: Television

back to some of the physical stuff you used to do ...' I thought that people would like to see that again from her. Dragging the kid up the aisle, everyone pooh-poohed except her and me ... but it worked.''

He says that even suave Gere wanted to do physical humor humor, according to ancient theory, any of four bodily fluids that determined man's health and temperament. Hippocrates postulated that an imbalance among the humors (blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile) resulted in pain and disease, and that good health was . So they devised a scene where Gere would run crazily across an open field because his character was afraid of snakes.

But ever the wag, Marshall asked Gere first, ``Did you ever run without a gun in your hand?''

``Runaway Bride'' (Paramount; $29.99, also includes a Dixie Chicks music video. ``Pretty Woman: 10th Anniversary Edition'' (Disney/Buena Vista; $29.99), also includes outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage and a Natalie Cole music video.
