'RISK TO HEALTH' Food store closed again.

Byline: SANDY McKENZIE

A FOOD shop in Middlesbrough has been shut down for the second time in three years after poor hygiene standards were uncovered. Middlesbrough Council Environmental Health officers discovered a serious mouse infestation infestation /in·fes·ta·tion/ (-fes-ta´shun) parasitic attack or subsistence on the skin and/or its appendages, as by insects, mites, or ticks; sometimes used to denote parasitic invasion of the organs and tissues, as by helminths. , gnawed foods and poor standards of cleanliness Cleanliness

Using emergency powers under food hygiene regulations, the council served a hygiene emergency prohibition notice to prevent the premises being used as a food business.

The council successfully applied at Teesside Magistrates' Court for an order to keep the premises closed until the owner proves his business no longer presents a serious health risk.

It's the second time in three years Rehman's has been closed. It was shut in August 2006 after mouse droppings 1. Store owner Istfaq Rehman was fined pounds 1,200 after pleading guilty to four Food Hygiene Act offences.

Senior Environmental Health officer Melissa Clapham said of the latest inspection: "The owner knew there was a mouse problem but failed to realise the severity of the infestation. He had employed a pest control pest control ncontrol m de plagas

firm to treat his premises but continued to trade, causing serious risks to health."

Councillor Barry Coppinger said: "Emergency closure powers are rarely used but are necessary to deal with food business operators who fail to keep their premises clean and safe."

The shop remained closed today with no one available for comment.
