Dr Barry Morgan Dr Barry Morgan, Archbishop of Wales (born 1947), has been the leader of the Church in Wales since 2003. Archbishop Morgan was born in Neath, and studied at University College, London, and Selwyn College, Cambridge. believes global recession may have led to a tipping point, turning sentiment against market-driven politics. He called for the church to raise the "consciousness of congregations" and force morality back to the centre of public debate. Speaking at Lampeter Dr Morgan hit out at market-driven policies which he blamed for damaging a sense of community and trust in public bodies. "Despite the undoubted pain it has brought in its wake, the global recession may have helped bring us to a tipping point. Market-driven politics have been discredited. "There is a groundswell ground·swell n. 1. A sudden gathering of force, as of public opinion: a groundswell of antiwar sentiment. 2. of public concern about excessive self-interest and the breakdown of community." He said the church had to hold its nerve in the face of those who claim religion has no place in politics and that it was a matter of basic human rights. |
