'Protected' witness in 23hr lock-up; MURDER.A WITNESS to Kevin McDaid's murder has been under 23-hour prison lock-up to keep him from men accused of the killing, a court heard yesterday. Lawyers for Peter Neill revealed the steps were taken while he was in custody after an alleged confrontation with loyalists Loyalists, in the American Revolution, colonials who adhered to the British cause. The patriots referred to them as Tories. Although Loyalists were found in all social classes and occupations, a disproportionately large number were engaged in commerce and the putting up flags in Coleraine, Co Derry. Mr Neill, 41, of Westbourne Crescent in the town, faces charges of incitement in·cite tr.v. in·cit·ed, in·cit·ing, in·cites To provoke and urge on: troublemakers who incite riots; inciting workers to strike. Belfast High Court heard Mr Neill asked police if it would be illegal to take down the flags. He was allegedly told it would not be but it would breach the peace.
