PILOT mistakes and not engine failure caused the Madrid air disaster last month experts claimed yesterday. A report from investigators reveals both engines were working normally when the Spanair flight from Madrid to the Canaries crashed on August 20. But despite normal thrust from its jets the MD-82 plane struggled to get off the ground because its wings were not ready for take-off. It then stalled and fell, killing 154 people. Black box data reveals wing flaps had not been extended and were still set zero degrees when the pilots lost control, thus providing no extra lift. A preliminary report also claimed the crew's fate was sealed when an alarm supposed to warn them of their mistake did not go off. The flaps had been set for take-off normally the first time the jet tried to leave. But that take-off attempt was abandoned due to a faulty fault·y adj. fault·i·er, fault·i·est 1.
