'PUNISHER': VENGEANCE IS HIS.

Byline: Redmond Carolipio Staff Writer

Revenge may be a dish best served cold, but ``The Punisher'' gives it to you raw.

THQ's latest plunge into the world of superheroes Superheroes are fictional heroes who possess abilities beyond those of normal human beings.

Superheroes may also refer to:
  • Superheroes (band), a Danish pop/rock band
  • Superheroes (album), by American heavy metal band Racer X
  • Superheroes
examines the concept of vigilante vigilante n. someone who takes the law into his/her own hands by trying and/or punishing another person without any legal authority. In the 1800s groups of vigilantes dispensed "frontier justice" by holding trials of accused horse-thieves, rustlers and shooters, and  justice through a bloody lens, constantly testing gamers' balance as they walk the line between righteous vengeance and furious anger.

In other words Adv. 1. in other words - otherwise stated; "in other words, we are broke"
put differently
, how far would you go if you were wronged?

Frank Castle knows. He's the Punisher, a former cop who watched his whole family die at the hands of the Mafia years ago.

Now he takes his pain out on criminals, and he does it as violently as possible. He is also no stranger to torture.

This is the first game I've played where you have full control over beating, choking or scaring the answers out of your enemies before deciding whether they live or die. And it gets very ugly.

Events like the Iraqi prison scandal have cast the concept of torture and intimidation under a new light, and in a way, a game like ``The Punisher'' finds out where a player stands.

For instance, instead of spraying a guy's blood all over the place, you can choose to simply knock him out. This actually earns you points (for gun upgrades and such), and the option of life is available for almost everyone you interrogate (1) To search, sum or count records in a file. See query.

(2) To test the condition or status of a terminal or computer system.
.

However, what you gain in mercy, you sacrifice in potential entertainment value. A mere loss of points is all that's stopping you from letting a charging rhino gore a gunman at the zoo.

While this kind of action is firmly within your power, the game's general penchant for wild gore is not. It's not enough for someone to get shot in the arm or head - the part must fly off or explode. Clearly, this is not a game that passes the Cheerios test.

It's also far from perfect. Some will compare this title to another game about a tortured soul, ``Max Payne Max Payne is a third-person shooter video game developed by the Finnish company Remedy Entertainment, produced by 3D Realms and published by Gathering of Developers in July, 2001 for Windows. ,'' but it doesn't chronicle mental anguish When connected with a physical injury, includes both the resultant mental sensation of pain and also the accompanying feelings of distress, fright, and anxiety. As an element of damages implies a relatively high degree of mental pain and distress; it is more than mere disappointment,  with nearly the same grace, nor does it have ``Payne's'' dark charm (though it is longer). I've also heard others point to the visuals, which look a little flat.

But ``The Punisher'' is entertaining in the way it rudely prods at a person's inner hate toward criminal elements. It makes you ask questions about yourself, and any game that does that is worth a look.
