 has a moral duty as a Christian to tackle global warming global warming, the gradual increase of the temperature of the earth's lower atmosphere as a result of the increase in greenhouse gases since the Industrial Revolution. , the Archbishop of Canterbury warned yesterday.

Dr Rowan Williams said that unless climate change was halted, the world risked death and suffering on a massive scale. He also had harsh words for US President George Bush, accusing him of being slow to come to terms with the scale of the problem.

Dr Williams said: "I don't think it's compatible with the Christian ethic eth·ic

The archbishop added: "We have to contemplate unwelcome possibilities if we want the global economy not to collapse and millions, billions, of people not to die."
