easyJet has been operating 737s from Newcastle since March 2003.

The first 737-700 arrived at the base in December of that year.

The firm has been increasing the number of aircraft it runs out of Newcastle ever since.

Since March 30 2003 easyJet 737-700s have made approximately 70,178 take-offs and landings at Newcastle Airport.

Now there are five easyJet Airbus A319s based at the airport.

easyJet's communications manager, Andrew McConnell, said: "Orange is the new Green!

"Our brand new fleet of Airbus 319s are some of the most environmentally-efficient aircraft available.

"These new aircraft coupled with easyJet's efficient business model, of higher seat densities and higher load factors, means that a traditional airline emits 27% more CO2 per passenger kilometre than easyJet.

"This means that anyone concerned about the environmental impact of flying should be flying with easyJet."
