Byline: Fred Shuster Daily News Music Writer

If your teen-age daughters won't stop talking about 'N Sync, don't go running to the kitchen in a panic. That's not the Sync they're excited about.

This 'N Sync is Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Lance Bass James Lance Bass[1][2] (born May 4 1979), known as Lance Bass (IPA pronunciation: [ˈbæs]),[3] , Joey Fatone Joseph Anthony Fatone, Jr. (born January 28, 1977) is an American singer, actor and television personality. It doesn't hurt that 'N Sync had two albums in the Top 10 last week - their self-titled debut and the holiday-themed ``Home for Christmas,'' both on RCA Records RCA Records is one of the flagship labels of Sony BMG Music Entertainment. Plus, there was that high-profile appearance last week on the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade telecast.

``We haven't changed - our schedules have changed, that's about it,'' said Timberlake, 17, the youngest member of the group. ``We have ourselves to keep us humble. We're a gathering of friends who really wanted to do this particular kind of music. We knew we wanted to sing a lot of a cappella a cap·pel·la

Strangely, Timberlake and his pals formed the group in Orlando but became an overnight success in Europe.

`Mickey Mouse' meeting

Chasez, originally from Washington, D.C., met Memphis-born Timberlake on the set of the Disney Channel's ``Mickey Mouse Mickey Mouse

Eventually, Timberlake returned to Orlando, where he hooked up with Kirkpatrick. The trio met New York New York, state, United States

'N Sync's debut album was first issued in Germany, where the pop-soul workout ``I Want You Back'' became a chart smash.

``Everything's a learning experience,'' Timberlake said from home. `` `The Mickey Mouse Club' was a great way for me to learn about acting and sound stages and studios. You get to see how the machinery works, how everything comes into play.''

The group appears Saturday in the premiere of the Disney Channel's ``Holidays in Concert'' cable special and as presenters on Monday's on Fox's Billboard Music Awards. Christmas Day, you can get in sync with 'N Sync on ABC's ``Walt Disney Noun 1. Bob Bell, music buyer for the Wherehouse chain, called the quintet ``unstoppable'' a few days before an April 16 date at the 17,500-seat Forum sold out in 10 minutes.

``We want to be heard by all age groups,'' Timberlake said. ``We came out first on the radio. If people were into the song, then they were into the group. Shortly after that, they matched the faces with the song.''

market with high-energy teen music made by teens, just like Hanson and Brandy.

A typical fan is Tina Mathew, 15, a Maryland high schooler who started an 'N Sync site on the Web in July.

``Their music is so upbeat, and they seem like the type of people you want to talk to,'' she said. ``They're not stuck up about their success or anything. They differ from the Backstreet Boys musically, too. A lot of people just hear the dance beat and assume they're the same, but really they're not. There's differences in lyrics, beats and singing styles.''

There's that B-word again - Backstreet. 'N Sync not only share the same manager and home base, but both groups have a cute young blond as their object of female devotion.

``Being compared to others is just something that comes along with being in a group,'' says Timberlake, 'N Sync's teen-age poster boy in question. ``Things will change. When Toni Braxton first came out, she had to deal with being compared to Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. It's not a big deal with us. I think people recognize the difference when they come see our show. Personally, I think our harmonies sound a lot different. We have a little more of an r&b sound.''

The members of 'N Sync insist there's no competition, even when their debut album overtook Backstreet in the Top 200 after a savvy Disney Channel Editing of this page by unregistered or newly registered users is currently disabled due to vandalism.  concert special aired in July.

``We didn't come into this business to beat anybody out,'' Timberlake said. ``We weren't thinking about anybody except ourselves when we started. We're not here to knock anybody off their platform - we want to make a platform of our own. We're just all about 'N Sync. It's a big country, and there's room for everybody. I'm not worried about what anyone has to say about us or what other groups might think of us. We're just here to be the first 'N Sync, not the second anybody else.''

Still, despite a packed schedule that will see 'N Sync on TV and in concert throughout the new year, Timberlake says it's all business as usual.

Even as far as girlfriends are concerned?

``I can't get close to anybody,'' he laughingly moans, then gets serious. ``I'm trying. It's a hard thing to do being in a different city every day. Personally, I'm not good over the phone. I've tried, but it doesn't work for me. I'm just trying to keep my options open for when things maybe settle down.

``When we're at home, we go out on dates if we meet someone. We'll definitely ask them out if time permits, but we're all really focused on what we're doing right now. Everything else is just kind of secondary.''
