'McCourt would not like statue' LITERATURE.

FRANK McCourt's brother has begged council bosses not to erect a statue in memory of the late author.

Malachy McCourt Malachy McCourt (born September 20, 1931 in Brooklyn, New York) is an Irish-American actor, writer and politician. He was the 2006 Green party candidate for governor in New York State, losing to the Democratic candidate Eliot Spitzer. He is the younger brother of Frank McCourt.  said the Angela's Ashes writer would have preferred the money be put into a scholarship for Limerick's most disadvantaged children.

He blasted a statue as a "meaningless, expensive kind of thing" and added: "What he would have wanted would be a scholarship for a poor kid, named after him.

A statue for the author, who died on July 20 aged 78, had been planned for Bedford Row, Co Limerick - the same street where there is a statue of Richard Harris.

More than 200 people, including former US President Bill Clinton, attended a New York New York, state, United States
