'Mafia rule' hospitals.


A RETIRED surgeon yesterday slammed a hospital for behaving like the Mafia in its silence over health problems.

Dr Maurice Nelligan branded lack of criticism about problems in the health service as "omerta o·mer·ta  
n.
A rule or code that prohibits speaking or divulging information about certain activities, especially the activities of a criminal organization.
" - the Italian underworld's code of silence.

It comes after the family of 76-year-old Peg McEntee, who was left on a hospital trolley trolley: see streetcar.  for more than 60 hours, defended going public.

Peg was in Dublin's Mater Hospital after a heart attack.

Dr Nelligan told Newstalk radio hospital managers don't speak out about lack of resources because they fear disciplinary measures.
