'MY ADVICE TO EVERYONE' PEDRO ALMODOVAR ON LIFE, LOVE AND 'TALK TO HER'.

Byline: Glenn Whipp Film Writer

We could describe the plot of Pedro Almodovar's new movie, ``Talk to Her,'' but then you probably wouldn't want to go see it. Like a lot of the Spanish filmmaker's work, the story sounds pretty tasteless taste·less

``His movies just keep getting more unbelievably good each time out,'' says director Alexander Payne (``About Schmidt,'' ``Election''), no stranger himself to critical acclaim. ``It's so nice to go to the theater and know you're in the presence of a master who knows what the hell he's doing.''

Almodovar's last movie, ``All About My Mother,'' won the director the Oscar for best foreign language film. It, too, defied Defied is an active punk rock band from Long Beach/Wilmington, California. So what is ``Talk to Her'' about? Let's just say it concerns two comatose co·ma·tose

women and the men who love them. We'll leave it at that, and let Almodovar fill in the blanks with his own words.

Before we let Almodovar take over and tell us what he has learned over the years, we should mention one other thing. Midway through ``Talk to Her,'' which opens wider on Christmas Day, Almodovar takes viewers on a brief detour with a black-and-white silent movie called ``The Shrinking Lover'' that both advances the main film's plot and stands as the greatest silent short produced in the past 80 years.

We would say more, but then you probably wouldn't want to go see it.

Expectations, great and otherwise: Yes, there's pressure in following an Oscar-winning film. It's inevitable. And that's good. It means people want to see what you do next. Of course, I think people are more excited to see if you might tumble and have a horrible failure. But at least they're paying attention Noun 1. paying attention - paying particular notice (as to children or helpless people); "his attentiveness to her wishes"; "he spends without heed to the consequences"

desire comes from in my films. Well, I've been in love several times. That is enough experience.

The gift of gab gift of gab
n.
The ability to talk readily, glibly, and convincingly.
: ``Talk to Her'' is my advice to everyone. It means talk to someone even if you have no real clear hope of being heard. It also means do something even if you're not sure what you can get in return. Essentially, it means talk to whoever you have near you - your father, your mother, your boyfriend, your girlfriend. The word - even if it's a monologue monologue, an extended speech by one person only. Strindberg's one-act play The Stronger, spoken entirely by one person, is an extreme example of monologue.  - is our best instrument. It can resolve any problem you have with anyone. When you speak, it proves that you love.

It starts with passion: For me, success has never meant wanting to do big-budget films or films with big stars. Success means I can take even bigger risks. It all starts with the irrational desire to tell a story that you are passionate about. If you don't have that passion, you might as well stay in bed.

Dating and the movies: I live the conception and creation of a film as if I'm in a love relationship. Both have the same parts pleasure and terrible pain, and that's part of the adventure.

See it first, ask him about it later: When actors tell me, ``Pedro, we can't tell this story,'' I know I'm on the right track. The stories in my movies are important, but the tone is what really defines the movie. With ``Talk to Her,'' I hate to tell people what the movie is about. It sounds almost monstrous. You just have to see it and then we can have a conversation.

Paging Dr. Freud: Women inspire me to write comedies, and men, tragedies. Don't ask me why. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

"Don't know the trade." A Street expression used whenever one party lacks knowledge of a trade or receives conflicting instructions from the other party.
.

One need not be the loneliest number: If one person truly loves, then there's a love relationship. Obviously, if both partners love, then that's much better. But I've seen friends who have created - out of nothing but their own will and desire - a relationship and sometimes that relationship has led to marriage and real love.

But, then again: Of course, you have to devote your entire life to do that. Personally, that's not for me. I'm not willing to give up everything.

Talk to him: Every human being searches for reciprocity reciprocity

In international trade, the granting of mutual concessions on tariffs, quotas, or other commercial restrictions. Reciprocity implies that these concessions are neither intended nor expected to be generalized to other countries with which the contracting parties
. That's what we all hope for. I search for it with my audience.

General hospital stuff: Most movies present hospitals as a temple of pain. To some extent, that's true. But in this movie, I wanted to show the hospital as a place almost stopped in time where people meet and are more sincere. People can't lie in a hospital waiting room or when they're sitting with a patient. Visiting someone in a hospital puts you in a very real place. You don't pretend to be anyone you are not. And that helps you communicate with others.

Back to that loneliness thing: There are certain types of loneliness that you can never take away. You carry them with you your entire life. And it doesn't have anything to do with being married or being part of a couple or having children. It's just man's destiny.

He must not have much to talk about these days: When I talk about myself, I talk about my failures more than my successes. They interest me more.

The Golden Rule (sort of): The best and the worst that life will bring us have to do with the people who surround us. So you might as well be generous and hope that the generosity will inspire others.

The deepest meaning of his work: As in any film, the message is ``Go see it.'' Then, in a subliminal subliminal /sub·lim·i·nal/ (-lim´i-n'l) below the threshold of sensation or conscious awareness.

sub·lim·i·nal
adj.
1. Below the threshold of conscious perception. Used of stimuli.
