'MINI-BELLAGIO' RISES FROM ARTS PLAZA REFLECTING POOL.

As the city celebrates the 10th anniversary of its Civic Arts Plaza, work continues on the Conejo Valley The Conejo Valley is a region spanning both Southeastern Ventura County and Northwest Los Angeles County in Southern California, United States. A reflecting pool is a structure often used in memorials. It generally consists of a shallow pool of water, usually quite calm.

The project has included adding 15 water-jet fountains to improve water circulation and deal with maintenance problems in the 6,500-square-foot reflecting pool on the plaza's third level.

The new fountains come with lighting for programmable water shows under a plan to ``greatly enhance the aesthetics for ... all those who visit the site,'' construction project coordinator Elizabeth Perez said in a presentation to the City Council.

``Everybody is starting to call it our mini Bellagio,'' said Perez, explaining that the fountain heights should be programmed with the lighting by this weekend. ``It's an exciting addition to the plaza.''

 Civic Arts Plaza has helped turn the once rundown Old Town section of Thousand Oaks into a modern district. The Civic Arts Plaza, visible along the Ventura Freeway The Ventura Freeway is a freeway in southern California running from Ventura to Pasadena. It is the principal east-west route through Ventura County and in the southern San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County. , is one of the most prominent buildings in Thousand Oaks.

But complaints of construction defects, including water leaks, led to a lawsuit and multimillion-dollar settlement with a contractor in 2001. Part of this money is being used to repair the reflecting pool.

So far the cost of redesigning and rebuilding the pool is estimated at $450,000, including the $106,000 added this week, with most of the money coming from the lawsuit settlement.

Work using money from the settlement has been completed on portions of the Civic Arts Plaza's facade, windows, roofing and decking.
