Blackpool 4 Wigan 1 ROBERTO MARTINEZ'S nightmare start continued last night - as his Wigan side took a pasting from the Blackpool reserves.

The Spaniard made nine changes of his own from the side that suffered a 5-0 thrashing at Manchester United's hands on Saturday.

But the fresh faces flopped to a humiliating defeat as Ishmel Demontagnac, Ben Burgess and Charlie Adam put the Seasiders three up by the break. Gary Taylor-Fletcher added a fourth, before Antonio Amaya netted a consolation goal in stoppage time as the Latics were torn apart.

Martinez (below) admitted: "We threw the game away. There are certain standards that are not acceptable and the players should know that. This was a chance for players who have not been involved in the league to have an opportunity and it wasn't good enough.

"That is something we need to know as a coaching staff. When players are given a chance they need to take it."

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway declared: "I don't know if some of them fancied it - but my lads did.

"I made changes and some of them screamed at me that they wanted to play in the team on Saturday."

Holloway's men were in front inside three minutes as winger Demontagnac hammered a shot past Mike Pollitt from distance.

Burgess set that up and then netted himself with 19 minutes on the clock.

He raced away from a Wigan defence while they were appealing for offside and beat keeper Pollitt with a weak 20-yard effort.

Blackpool added a third before the break when Paul Scharner chopped down Billy Clarke in the box. Adam saw his penalty saved, but slotted home the rebound.

Wigan improved after the break, with Scott Sinclair hitting a post with a second half free-kick, but their defensive frailties were exposed again as Adam broke from the back. He fed sub Taylor-Fletcher for a calm finish from the edge of the box.

Debutant Amaya planted a header past Matt Gilks from Ben Watson's corner in the third minute of stoppage time for the red-faced Latics.
