'Kid' Stays in Picture as suit alleges contract breach on biopic. (Media & Technology).

," whose rapid rise as a Hollywood producer earned him the nickname "Golden Boy" in the '70s, has been sued over "The Kid Stays in the Picture," the 2002 documentary based on his autobiography.

David Weisman, who produced the 1985 film "Kiss of the Spider Woman Kiss of the Spider Woman (El beso de la mujer araƱa) may refer to:

," claims in a suit filed May 7 in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Superior Court that Evans breached an implied and oral contract for Weisman to write, direct and produce the filmed version of his life.

In the suit, Weisman said he produced a 16-minute demo film in early 1998, and that Evans wanted to move forward with him, the suit says.

But, the suit says, when the project wasn't able to be financed Evans "appeared to abandon the documentary."

Later, directors Brett Morgen and Nanette Burstein, along with Graydon Carter Edward Graydon Carter (born 14 July 1949) is a Canadian-born American journalist and author. He is editor of Vanity Fair. He also co-founded, with Kurt Andersen, the satirical monthly magazine Spy in 1986. , editor of Vanity Fair, persuaded Evans to make the film.

"The Kid Stays in the Picture" featured interviews with Evans, his ex-wife Phyllis George and Dustin Hoffman. The 1994 book chronicled Evans' rise through the movie industry, which began as an actor and eventually led in 1964 to his appointment as chief of production for Paramount Pictures, where he remained for a decade. He was 44 when he left the post.

In addition to "Chinatown" and "Rosemary's Baby," Evans produced "The Godfather," "Love Story," "The Odd Couple" and "Harold and Maude."

His career faltered in the '80s after he was convicted of cocaine possession and sentenced to a year's probation and his marriage to Ali MacGraw failed.

James DeJulil, development executive at Robert Evans Co., said Evans would have no comment on the suit.

The Weisman suit named the film's distributor, Vivendi Universal Entertainment LP and its subsidiaries USA Films Inc., Focus Features LLC (Logical Link Control) See "LANs" under data link protocol.

 and USA Interactive Corp. Angela Johnson, a spokeswoman for Focus Features, returning calls to Universal, declined comment. Also named were Morgen, Burstein and their production company, Highway Films LLC. They could not be reached.

Weisman's lawyer, James O'Callahan, at Girardi and Keese, could not be reached.
