'If we can't have signs, rural shops will close' Five-year dispute ends.

customers and safeguard jobs, claims a trader.

The plea from Mike Skerrett came after Conwy County Council withdrew a charge against him at Llandudno Magistrates Court over an A-board advertising sign.

The council had accused him of putting his Spar shop sign in Dolwyddelan on a grass verge on the A470 against highways rules in a long running dispute.

Conwy County Council accused Mr Skerrett of contravening or failing to comply with an abatement notice served by the local authority concerning a statutory nuisance nuisance, in law, an act that, without legal justification, interferes with safety, comfort, or the use of property. A private nuisance (e.g., erecting a wall that shuts off a neighbor's light) is one that affects one or a few persons, while a public nuisance (e.g.  order on September 14 2004.

Mr Skerrett admits to occasionally leaving the A-board on the verge On the Verge (or The Geography of Yearning) is a play written by Eric Overmyer. It makes extensive use of esoteric language and pop culture references from the late nineteenth century to 1955. .

Conwy County Council said: "The case was withdrawn because Mr Skerrett has now removed the items."

Mr Skerrett, 57, said: "I'm relieved and delighted it has been withdrawn.

"Now that the pressure is off me, I am going to start a campaign to push for rural businesses to be allowed to put up simple A-boards within reason.

"I have sent 24 photographs of alleged infringements by other businesses to the council.

"It seems like it's one rule for one and one rule for everyone else. It's a huge minefield of legislation that is preventing businesses promoting their shops."

He is on Conwy Rural Partnership committee, representing Menter Nant Conwy.

On his own case, he says a letter from Conwy Council's highways department states the proceedings will be withdrawn provided there will be 'no repetition of the attachment of items to street furniture' nor the 'display of A-boards on the highway'.

But Mr Skerrett still claims the case cost him hundreds of pounds in fuel to make the 60-mile round trip between Dolwyddelan and Llandudno Magistrates Court due to several adjournments.

The shop owner, who has six employees, also had to find staff to replace him while he was at court.

Mr Skerrett says he has to park his Ford Sierra The Ford Sierra was a large family car built by Ford Europe between 1982 and 1993, originally designed by Uwe Bahnsen, Robert Lutz and Patrick le Quément, .

Released on 21 September, 1982, it replaced the Ford Cortina/Taunus, and was itself replaced by the Mondeo.
estate car 50 yards from his Spar shop - with the A-board on it, not on the grass verge itself - to allow passing motorists time to slow down and stop.

When he drives his car he leaves it on a roof rack.

He said: "It's absurd that I can attach the A-board to my car quite legally but it is an offence to place an item on the verge."

Nevertheless, advertising is essential.

He added: "Passing trade keeps shops alive.

"We have put up our turnover by 60% in the last five years by attracting passing trade."
