TWO doctors plotted to kill thousands of innocent people in car bomb attacks, a court heard yesterday.

Bilal Abdulla, 28, and Mohammed Asha, 29, planned "murder on an indiscriminate and a wholesale scale" at Glasgow airport and in London's West End, it is alleged.

Abdulla was in a burning car packed with explosives which fellow Muslim fanatic Kafeel Ahmed, 28, crashed into the airport's doors.

Driver Ahmed was killed.

The two men also parked two cars stuffed with nail bombs, petrol and gas at two targets in the capital.

Neurologist Asha, said to have masterminded the operation, and trainee surgeon Abdulla, hid behind their cover as respectable doctors.

But prosecutor Jonathan Laidlaw QC said they were bent on revenge for what they believed was the persecution of Muslims This article or section may contain original research or unverified claims.

He said: "Apart from the shocking nature of the activity these defendants were engaged in, the extraordinary thing about this case is that both these defendants are doctors.

"They turned their attention away from the treatment of illness to the planning of murder."

The three men belonged to an Islamic cell which spent six months plotting their "spectacular" attacks to bring terror and fear to Britain, the prosecution claims.

Jordanian Asha, married with a two-year-old child and who worked at the University Hospital of North Staffs, supplied the brains and cash. Indian student Ahmed and Abdulla bought makeshift bomb ingredients from DIY DIY

Then on June 29, last year, Abdulla and Ahmed drove two Mercedes to London and parked them outside the Tiger Tiger club in Haymarket and at a nearby bus stop where it was likely panicking people would run.

Mr Laidlaw said: "That was not through any lack of effort by the bombers. It was no more than good fortune that nobody died." The men then went on the run.

With police and security services closing in, they decided on a suicide attack, Woolwich crown court Woolwich Crown Court, located at 2 Belmarsh Road, Thamesmead is one of twelve Crown Courts serving Greater London.

, was told.

The next day Abdulla and Ahmed smashed a Jeep Cherokee, stuffed with petrol bombs and gas canisters, into Glasgow's airport's entrance on its busiest day of the year.

Mr Laidlaw said: "The Jeep became trapped in the terminal doors and despite the best efforts of the bombers, and although there was a fierce fire, the Jeep did not explode."

Ahmed - who had studied for a Masters in aeronautical engineering at Queen's University in Belfast between 2001 and 2003 - was horrifically burned and died a month later. Abdulla was arrested and Asha was held when police swooped on his car on the M6.

Asha was a behind-the-scenes mastermind, the court heard.

Abdulla constantly contacted him.

Mr Laidlaw said the bombers wanted to bring the same panic to Britain as engulfed the nation after the 2005 London bombings.

He added: "The terrorists knew perfectly well that the public here would be gripped by fear.

"Their plan was to carry out a series of attacks on the public using bombs concealed in vehicles.

"No warnings were to be given and the cars were to be positioned in busy urban areas."

The court heard that Abdulla and Asha "share, despite their professions and obligations to save life and avert suffering, the same extreme religious and murderous ideology".

But the intelligence services did not pick up on their plot.

Abdulla claimed he wanted only to cause damage not kill. Mr Laidlaw said: "This defence is ludicrous."

Asha, of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffs, and Abdulla, of Houston, Glasgow, both deny conspiracy to murder and cause explosions. The case continues.
