A total of more than one million people - equivalent to a thirdof the entire Welsh population - flooded the city centre on St David's opening three days. Over the same three-day period last year electronic counters dotted throughout the city centre recorded 552,000 shoppers. The surge resulted in a 250%rise in footfall in The Hayes on Thursday as people walked to and from St David's, but other areas of the city also benefited with 30% more shoppers being recorded on St Mary Street and 18% more in the Queens Arcade shopping centre.
