Six weeks later the dog was diagnosed with a spinal problem, leaving her struggling to walk and unable to have pups.

The disease - hemivertebrae - is a known genetic problem with bulldogs and there is no cure, although operations can sometimes relieve the symptoms.

Hairdresser Lindsey, 28, of Glasgow, says she and daughter Sophie, four, are absolutely heartbroken.

She added: "The condition is hereditary and Izzie had it in the womb. She can only deteriorate, never improve.

"She was KC registered and the breeder breeder

2. a female animal used basically for the production of saleable young.
 assured me she was fit and healthy. I didn't have any reason to think otherwise.

"Izzie is a wee soul and we are so attached to her. But if her condition worsens, we'll have no option but to put her to sleep. It's awful, heartbreaking."
