'I tried to shoot down the station bomber' YOU ANSWER.

FURTHER to letters in Remember When, I agree that the Dornier 217 bomber was certainly at a low level when it dropped its bombs on Middlesbrough station - I was only about 400 yards away when it happened, says Danny Mahoney of Marton.

"As a young child I was outside my home in Gosford Street pretending to shoot it down with finger and thumb when my auntie (Katie Ward) grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and threw me into the house, and then I was pushed under the table with the rest of the family.

"The blast from the bombing of the station came straight up Albert Street Albert Street may refer to:
  • Albert Street, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
  • Albert Street (Ottawa), Ontario, Canada
  • Albert Street (Regina), Saskatchewan, Canada
  • Albert Street (Singapore), Singapore
(which was parallel with the end of the station as shown in the photo in issue 67) and stopped at the houses in our street.

"All the windows were blown out and there was a lot of screaming and shouting before things settled down.

"I wasn't aware of any warning (William McDermott, who happens to be a relation of mine also quoted this in his letter). If there was we weren't able to get to our air raid shelter in time, which was only yards away in the cellar of Winterschalden's bottle factory on the corner of Albert Street and Gosford Street.

"When my father rejoined the Irish Guards The Irish Guards, part of the Guards Division, is a regiment of the British Army.

As of 2006, it is one of only two purely Irish regiments remaining in the British Army. (The other is the Royal Irish Regiment.
at the outbreak of the war my mother, elder brother and I moved from London to get away from the anticipated bombing of the capital.
