DRA, founded in 1991 by Taylor Company's Hernando Cortez, gives economic support to dancers who have the virus. "What started out as a bunch of people getting together at the Pride march and marching in solidarity for our friends has now evolved into an organization raising over $125,000 a year," explained DRA associate director Denise Roberts. Adds Cortez: "I feel overwhelmed and useless at times, knowing the nation has reported 900,000 HIV HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), either of two closely related retroviruses that invade T-helper lymphocytes and are responsible for AIDS. There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is responsible for the vast majority of AIDS in the United States.  cases and the number is still growing. What we do on a personal level to fight AIDS helps me through these desperate times. I hope one day all us AIDS organizations will be out of business."

Steps hopes to make its fund-raiser an annual event, says Paumgarten. DRA's fall gala will be comprised entirely of pieces by dance artists lost to AIDS, including Christopher Gillis, Edward Stierle, Clark Tippet, and Choo-San Goh. DRA and Broadway Cares assisted fifty-two dance artists last year, providing services worth nearly $174,00.
