'I TRIED MY HARDEST TO SAVE YOU..' Sad tribute to flood victim.

A HERO teen who battled in vain to stop his best friend drowning left a touching note yesterday.

He frantically tried to pull Max's head clear of the raging torrent pinning him underwater against a grille. But the current was too strong and Max had been submerged for 20 minutes by the time firefighters arrived.

Daniel sent flowers to the spot in Witney, Oxon, with a poignant message that read: "You were a great friend - I'll miss you Max. (I tried my hardest). Love Dan."

He is recovering at home after being treated in hospital for hypothermia hypothermia

Dad Chris said: "Physically he'll be fine. But emotionally he's not good at all."

Tributes have piled up at the meadow. One read: "God bless you Max. We all love you and will never forget you."

Residents said it was inevitable someone would die in the dangerous culvert.

The Environment Agency is investigating.
