Customers were alerted by the sound of screeching brakes and a loud bang outside the Morris Dancers pub, in the village of Scarisbrick, near Southport. The victim, a 42-year-old woman, was found lying face down in Southport Road. Witnesses say she was struck by a Citroen C2 vehicle which had overtaken a number of cars waiting at the traffic-light controlled pedestrian A pedestrian is a person travelling on foot, whether walking or running. They said it appeared the driver of the silver-coloured vehicle failed to see the woman as she was crossing the road. The car then swerved, struck one of the traffic lights and lost a wheel in the impact, after which the two young men who were inside the vehicle ran off across the pub car park. Police later arrested two males, who were yesterday in custody. It is not known at this stage whether the vehicle they were driving was stolen. The female victim, who has not been named but is from the Scarisbrick area, suffered multiple injuries and was taken to Southport Hospital, where she later died. Paul Hancock, assistant manager at the Morris Dancers pub, who lives in a flat above the premises, described hearing a screeching noise followed by a loud bang at the time of the incident at 11.45pm on Saturday. He said: "I raced outside and saw the car dumped in the middle of the road. The airbags had been activated activated a state of being more than usually active. "There were still a lot of people in the pub and they went outside to check on the woman, who was lying face down in the road, but there was nothing they could do apart from call an ambulance. "Even though a wheel had come off the car, they tried to keep on driving. When they realised they couldn't, the two lads inside made a run for it through our car park and went straight over a big wire fence a fence consisting of posts with strained horizontal wires, wire netting, or other wirework, between.
