Byline: Gideon Rubin Staff Writer

SAN BERNARDINO San Bernardino, city, United States
San Bernardino (săn bûr'nədē`nō), city (1990 pop. 164,164), seat of San Bernardino co., S Calif., at the foot of the San Bernardino Mts.; inc. 1854.
 - The JetHawks had a chance to close out their best-of-five California League The California League is a minor league baseball league which operates throughout the state of California. Before 2002, it was classified as a "High-A" league, indicating its status as a Class A league with the highest level of competition within that classification, and the fifth  divisional championship series Sunday against a San Bernardino team they had defeated in 11 of their last 12 meetings, including six straight.

But on this night, the JetHawks were up against Carlos Garcia Carlos Garcia can refer to:

, the California League Pitcher of the Year and one of the top prospects in the Dodgers organization. Not surprisingly, the JetHawks struggled to a 3-2 loss before 989 at San Bernardino Stadium.

Because of Garcia's dominant performance and some timely hitting, the Stampede - which trailed 2-0 in the series going into Sunday afternoon's game - will live to fight another day. Garcia struck out a season-high 13 batters and the Stampede made the most of only four hits to force Game 4, which will be played at 7:05 p.m. tonight at San Bernardino.

Garcia, who was credited with the win, scattered eight hits in 7 2/3 innings. He surrendered two runs - one of which was earned - and he allowed just one walk.

Despite being charged with the loss, JetHawks starter Scott Atchison Scott Barham Atchison (born March 29, 1976 in Denton, Texas) is a relief pitcher in the San Francisco Giants organization. External Links

was equally impressive. He struck out 10 hitters in seven innings of four-hit ball, walking none and allowing three earned runs.

``He had his A-fastball and tight slider A block of material that holds the read/write head of a magnetic disk. See flying head. ,'' JetHawks catcher Scott Maynard said of Atchison. ``He threw a hell of a game. He battled.''

Maynard, the JetHawks' leading hitter against San Bernardino over the regular season with a .458 average (22 for 48), was 3 for 4 on the day, improving his series average to .500 (6 for 12).

``We weren't aggressive early in the game and he stuck it to us,'' manager Mark Parent said of Garcia's dominance. ``He got us down in the count, we had to swing at his pitch and we couldn't get it.''

San Bernardino took an early lead when Jimmy Gonzalez tripled to right center with one out in the bottom of the first, then scored on Pete Paciorek's infield grounder.

The Stampede made it 3-0 in the fifth when Jesus Feliciano blooped a two-run single to right center.

Craig Kuzmic got the JetHawks offense started in the sixth, singling to left with one out, then scoring when Juan Silvestre followed with an RBI RBI

The JetHawks closed to within 3-2 in the eighth when they capitalized on two Stampede errors that set up Freddie May's RBI single with two outs. Wilfredo Quintana then came to the plate with the tying run on second, but San Bernardino reliever Elvis Correa induced him to fly out to left, leaving the potential tying run in scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on .
