'HAWKS IN PLAYOFFS ON LOSING NOTE HIGH DESERT 13, JETHAWKS 9.

Byline: Gideon Rubin Staff Writer

ADELANTO - The JetHawks will have to settle for worst-to-wild card.

Lancaster needed to gain one game on first-place Lake Elsinore on the last day of the regular season to become just the fourth team in California League The California League is a minor league baseball league which operates throughout the state of California. Before 2002, it was classified as a "High-A" league, indicating its status as a Class A league with the highest level of competition within that classification, and the fifth  history to win at least a share of a second-half title after finishing last in the first half.

But having already clinched a wild-card berth, resting several starters in preparation for the playoffs apparently mattered more to the JetHawks than a historical footnote, and so the JetHawks essentially fielded their B-squad in a 13-9 loss to High Desert in front of 3,055 at Mavericks Stadium.

The loss snapped Lancaster's winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

``Of course I wanted to win the division, but I had to look at what wasbest for our ballclub going into the playoffs,'' JetHawks manager Bill Plummer William Francis Plummer (born March 21, 1947 in Oakland, CA) was a catcher for the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, and the Seattle Mariners. While never a regular player (he was Johnny Bench's backup catcher during the Big Red Machine years), he did play solid defense.  said. ``A lot of our guys are banged up, and this gave us a chance to get some other players in the lineup that we might need (in the playoffs).''

3-1 for its 10th consecutive victory.

JetHawks starter Edgar Gonzalez - slated to start Game 2 of the divisional playoffs against Lake Elsinore on Wednesday - pitched just one inning in what was the equivalent of a side outing. He allowed two runs on two hits but wasn't involved in the decision.

Kade Johnson and Chris Rowan hit back-to-back homers in the sixth and seventh innings for High Desert.

Johnson's three-run homer off JetHawks reliever Cliff McMachen (0-1) in the sixth broke a 5-5 tie. High Desert scored five runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.

--Notes: Lake Elsinore earned home-field advantage in the divisional playoffs by winning the second-half title and will host Game 2 and Game 3 (if necessary) of the three-game series.

--Matchup: Right-hander Beltran Perez (3-2, 2.51 ERA) will pitch for the JetHawks when they play host to Lake Elsinore in Game 1 of the divisional playoff series Tuesday night at 7:15. Right-hander Duncan McAdoo (8-4, 4.01) will pitch for the Storm.
