The Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) system serves the residents of Los Angeles, California.
with the "Ageless Heroes Community Service Award" on April 30.

Beginning in 1987 this program was created to meet the needs of two groups of Los Angeles residents -- the one-third of elderly seniors living alone and needing meaningful contact with others and the over 200,000 Los Angeles children who have no one to care for them after school and who have among the lowest reading scores in California.

This program has grown from the Los Angeles Public Library to a statewide program bringing people together from diverse cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds to share in the love of reading. The Library grandparents serve as positive role models for the children, fostering intergenerational understanding, emphasizing the joy of reading and increasing reading skills.

"Grandparents and Books embodies the spirit of the Ageless Heroes program, bridging the generations by employing grandparents to help children experience a love of learning," said Lisa Rubino, Senior Vice President and Chief Executive of Blue Shield's Medicare Region. "We are pleased to be recognizing this excellent program."

In addition to the Community Service Award, Grandparents and Books will receive a $2,500 gift from Blue Shield Blue Shield A US not-for-profit health care insurer that is a reimbursement intermediary for physicians. Cf Blue Cross. .
