The Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) system serves the residents of Los Angeles, California. with the "Ageless Heroes Community Service Award" on April 30. Beginning in 1987 this program was created to meet the needs of two groups of Los Angeles residents -- the one-third of elderly seniors living alone and needing meaningful contact with others and the over 200,000 Los Angeles children who have no one to care for them after school and who have among the lowest reading scores in California.
