The Weight Management Clinic's Donal O'Shea said: "We don't need that level of new Subways.

"I would like to halt the number allowed to open as there is a clear link between the number of outlets that chains like Subway have and obesity levels around the world."

A Subway spokesman said: "We offer both low-fat subs and subs that are higher in fat. We ensure customers are provided with the necessary information."
